"I can't, it's too HARD" is probably the most common response when asking someone why they never tell their friends or family about Jesus. The funny thing is that not too long ago, I was saying the exact same thing. So what changed?
The truth is that I discovered that it actually isn’t as hard as we/I thought it was. In fact, once you have done it a few times, it starts to become, dare I say, easy. Now I must confess, I’ve never had a burning bush type encounter where Jesus came down and told me what to do, I cant even remember the day that it all changed. All I know is that, one day it clicked, and I finally understood that telling people about Jesus doesn’t have to be this freaky, overly spiritual thing, in fact it’s as easy as just starting a conversation.
Now let me just give some context here, I’m not saying go out and find the first person you see and just start saying things like “Jesus loves you, turn to him or go to hell”. Because quite frankly you will probably walk away with a black eye or at least have left that person with an even grater resentment for Jesus and the Truth.
Side note: There are many different ways to go about telling people about Jesus, these are just a few of the ways that I have found work for me.
Ok so here it goes, this is my secret to telling people about Jesus. Find out what they (the person you are talking to) are passionate about.
You see everyone is passionate about something, and loves talking about that specific thing, whether it be soccer or politics. All you need to do is show interest in them, and their lives.
Then what often happens is that person will ask you what you are passionate about, and that’s where the door opens. Because you have first invested in that person, you now have the respect and authority to speak into their life. So as soon as they ask what you are passionate about, you can mention your faith, and what God has done in your life.
(Remember the most powerful weapon we have in evangelism is our testimony, because it is the undeniable proof of what Jesus has done in our lives).
What you often find is that instead of being freaked out or offended, the person you are speaking to will often be intrigued and want to know more about your story. And, just like that, you have been able to share the gospel of Jesus with someone, without it being awkward or hard.
A perfect example of this can be found in John 4, where Jesus talks to a Samaritan woman. If you read the scripture closely, you will notice that Jesus first spoke to the woman, and not about something random, but rather about something she knew a lot about – water. It’s only once he had spoken to her and established a relationship, that he brought her the gospel.
So, here is the challenge: next time you are in a conversation with a family member or friend, ask them what they are passionate about and then take the opportunity to share what you are passionate about, your faith in Jesus.
Once you have tried this, let us know. We would love to hear your story.
We are a small group of 20 to 30 somethings who are passionate about reaching our generation with the gospel. We recognize it can sometimes be hard to start a conversation about Jesus though, so we’ve made it our mission to help believers across the globe share their faith.
